How it works

Three steps, in any app.

If an app has a text field, Hello can type in it: email, chat, notes, documents, your code editor and browser pages.

  1. Hold Option

Hold the shortcut (Option by default) in any app. The indicator shows that Hello is listening.

  2. Speak naturally

Talk the way you normally do: Bangla, English, or both in the same sentence.

  3. Let go

Hello cleans up the text and pastes it where your cursor is.

Preview the indicator

Hold the button, or hold ⌥ Option on this page, to see the animation. This is only a preview. Nothing is recorded or pasted.

Features

Everything you need to stop typing.

A native Mac app. Speech recognition runs on your Mac, using its GPU, so dictation works without internet once the models are downloaded.

Smart editing

Hello tidies your speech as you talk. There are five rules, all on by default, and you can turn off any of them in Settings.

You say

“Um, hello team. Let's meet at five scratch that let's meet at six.”

Hello types

Hello team. Let's meet at six.

  • Removes “um”, “uh” and “erm”
  • “scratch that” deletes the sentence before it
  • “new line” and “new paragraph”
  • “number one … number two …” makes a list
  • Adds a full stop when you stop mid-sentence

Hands-free lock

Double-tap Option to keep recording without holding the key. Useful for longer thoughts.

Paste last

Missed the text field? Paste your last dictation again with ⌥ Option ⇧ Shift V.

Five recording indicators

Choose the look you like in Settings → Appearance. Each style shows your voice while you speak and has its own processing animation.

Classic

The original glowing capsule

Position

Top: near the menu bar. Classic starts here by default.

The indicator appears on whichever display your pointer is on. You can also change it from the Dictation menu.

Modes

Word replacements that apply only in the apps and websites you choose. One spelling in your work chat, another in your code editor.

Your profile

Words dictated, speaking speed, time saved compared with typing, streaks, and the apps you dictate in most.

Sounds

Start and stop sounds in seven themes, with a volume setting. On by default, and easy to turn off.

Commands

Optional and off by default. Say a phrase to open an app or a website, press a key, or start and stop dictation or notes. You can add your own phrases.

History

Each dictation is saved on your Mac, searchable and easy to copy. Keep it for 24 hours, 7 days (the default), 30 days or forever, or turn it off.

Native and light

A real Mac app, not a web wrapper. It lives in the menu bar, can open at login, and its window can be light, dark, or follow macOS.

Bangla + English

Talk the way you actually talk.

Most dictation tools make you pick one language. Hello cuts your speech into short pieces of about 1.5 to 3 seconds, works out the language of each piece, and sends it to the right speech model. Then it joins the text back together in order.

  • Switch mid-sentence. English with Bangla phrases, or Bangla with English words, in one dictation.
  • Word-level checks. Bangla words inside an English stretch are found with word timings and the Mac's spell checker, then transcribed again with the Bangla model.
  • You choose. Auto-detect, English only, or Bangla only. Turn on Bangla + English in Settings → Dictation → Languages.
  • Help tune it. “Help tune Bangla” is off by default. When you turn it on, Hello saves up to 100 dictations on your Mac, to tune detection to real speech. Nothing is uploaded.

Mixed speech is still being tuned, so results will vary. The examples on the right show how the pieces fit together. They are not a benchmark.

Notetaker

Meeting notes that know who said what.

When a call starts, Hello offers to take notes. If you say yes, it transcribes the meeting live on your Mac. No bot joins the call.

  • Works with your calls. Common meeting apps, calls in browser tabs, and chat-app calls and huddles.
  • Who spoke. An on-device voice model tells speakers apart. Name someone once and Hello recognizes their voice in later meetings. You can turn this off.
  • Where and when. Platform, app, browser profile and meeting link. With calendar access (off by default), the matching event's title and attendees too.
  • Everything in one place. Transcript, Overview, Notes and Summary tabs. Copy as Markdown, or move a meeting to the Trash.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is Hello really free?

Yes. Hello is free to download and use, and it is released under the MIT license. There are no paid plans, no trials and no ads.

Why does macOS warn me the first time I open Hello?

Hello is signed with its own certificate, but it is not notarized by Apple, so macOS asks you to confirm once. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to Hello. Updates install from inside Hello, so you normally only need to do this once.

How do updates work?

Hello checks for a new version once a day. When one is ready, Hello shows what's new. Confirm, and it downloads, installs and reopens itself. You can also check at any time from the menu bar icon → Check for Updates, or in Settings → General → About.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. After you download the speech models you need, dictation and meeting notes work offline.

Does it work on Windows, phones or Intel Macs?

Not right now. Hello is for Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 15 or later.

Which apps can I dictate into?

Any app with a text field: email, chat, notes, documents, your code editor, and browser pages. Hello pastes the text where your cursor is.

How well does it handle Bangla?

Hello has a speech model fine-tuned for Bangla, and it can switch between Bangla and English inside one dictation. Mixed speech is still being tuned. If you want to help, turn on “Help tune Bangla”. It keeps recordings on your Mac only.

Does a bot join my meetings?

No. Notetaker records and transcribes on your Mac, and nothing joins the call. The notes prompt also reminds you to let others know you're recording.

Where is my data stored?

Settings, history, models and meeting notes are kept in the voice-control folder inside ~/Library/Application Support. You can delete any dictation or meeting from inside Hello.
